Nat King Cole’s 1954 hit SMILE is a classic. If you've never listened, go listen to it. Below are a few of the lyrics and hopefully the tune is now in your head.
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile…..
I was on a video conference recently and through gallery view noted everyone’s facial expression. I laughed to myself looking at everyone’s expression and thought “Is life really that bad! “ No one was smiling and the expressions were pitiful. All of a sudden when a new speaker smiled while presenting, the entire dynamic of the conference changed! So when you are on a video conference with your clients and colleagues, make sure to look focused, interested, engaged…and SMILE! Unfortunately, our facial expressions are now hidden as we are wearing masks publicly and when we are interacting with others in a direct setting. This makes it very difficult to communicate with another when you can’t show your facial expressions nor see the other person’s. I read recently we have become “Dogs with No Tails!” So below are seven tips to add to your communication skills while wearing masks:
1. Relax your shoulders
2. Keep hands off hips and out of pockets
3. NOD…and NOD often!
4. Even if you can’t see a smile—it can be heard in your voice
5. Use your Eyes and Eyebrows-Happiness is shown in raised eyebrows.
6. Eyebrows pinched together show sadness
7. Implement Hand gestures such as: Thumbs Up, Heart Hands, V for Victory, Closed Hand on the Chest, Rock-n-Roll Horns and the Fist for Solidarity.
